The trouble starts when you take that number onto a roof that is already sitting at nineteen degrees.

Tilting panels up to hit the theoretical optimum means taller racking, more wind load, more penetrations, and a row spacing that eats the roof area you were trying to use. On the systems we have modelled both ways, the extra annual yield lands between two and four percent — and the extra hardware costs a good deal more than four percent.

So we mount flush to the roof plane and put the money into panel quality and shade mitigation instead. The exception is ground mount, where the racking has to exist anyway and the optimum tilt costs nothing extra to specify.

Optimal tilt looks tidy on a spreadsheet.
