We weigh four things on a first call: what kind of matter it is, what documentation already exists, how long ago it happened, and what is actually at stake. None of them alone decides it, but a matter that is three years old with no paperwork is one we will usually advise against pursuing — and we will say so on the call rather than after a retainer.
