on the horse's terms
Windrose began as a dairy farm with two ponies and a borrowed field. The cows are long gone. What stayed is the way the place is run — quietly, unhurried, with the same three families still doing the morning feeds.
We cap group lessons at six riders, because seven is a queue and not a class. Every horse works a maximum of four hours a day and takes two full days off each week.

Nobody here is put on a horse and told to hang on. Beginners spend their first three sessions on the lunge with no reins, because balance comes from the body and not the hands.
When a coach says you are ready to move up a group, that is the only reason you move up a group.

Every coach on the roster is qualified, insured, and rides the school horses themselves at least once a week. They know exactly what you are sitting on, and how it behaves on a cold Tuesday.

Blocks run in six-week terms so a coach can plan properly. Miss a week and we carry it forward — nobody loses a lesson to a head cold.
Saddle Club
Junior term riding with a stable-management hour built in. Children learn to pick out feet and tack up before they ever ask to canter.

Four graded groups, from cross-poles to a metre five. You move up when the canter is ready, not when the calendar says so.

Two hours out over the ridge, one coach to four riders. Assessed on arrival, and yes, there are two river crossings.

No feature walls and no trophy cabinet in the entrance. The money goes into footing, fencing and forage, in that order.

Silica and fibre surface, harrowed twice daily, ridden in all weathers.

Rubber matted, ventilated ridge, an individual feed board on every door.

Locked and alarmed, with a saddle fitter on site the first Thursday of the month.

What actually

happens on day one
Roughly two hours from arrival to leaving. You will not be left standing in a yard wondering where to go.
Tell us your history
How long you have ridden, your height and weight for horse matching, and anything a coach should know.
Fit hat and boots
Arrive twenty minutes early. We fit and loan a hat to current safety standard, and boots up to a size twelve.
Meet your horse
Someone walks you to the box, introduces the horse by name, and shows you how to lead through to the arena.
Ride, then review
Forty-five minutes assessed, then a coach recommends your group and books the first block of the term.
