Roughly a third of last year’s work was shot outside California. We take four people and hire the rest locally.
A director, a camera operator, a sound recordist and a producer. Everything else — grip, spark, art, drivers, fixers — comes from the country we are shooting in, because they know the light, the permits and which street will be closed on Saturday.
It is better for the film and cheaper than flying a unit. The only rule is that the four who travel have all worked together long enough to argue in shorthand.
